Recent IGSS Projects

  • Using a GIS to map the green spaces in Shannon, County Clare and to provide a database of their features and status together with illustrative photos. GPS was used intensively to ascertain both positions and outlines.
  • Using a GIS to map a wetland in Shannon by carrying out a new GPS survey of the wetland as well as the roads and pathways in the area and so providing maps which could be freely printed or placed on the web without continued payments to Ordnance Survey of Ireland (OSi).
  • Weekly survey of monuments (one afternoon per week) in the area of Shannon, Co. Clare and the use of GPS and GIS to advance methods of quickly recording outlines of monuments, their three-dimensional topography and that of the surrounding landscape (on DEMs).
  • Advising a consultancy (at the scoping stage) on the route that a new cable should take to avoid archaeological monuments and clusters of monuments (possible archaeological complexes).
  • Using GPS and GIS to map an area of land on the Burren, County Clare, to determine its perimeter, areas of dry-stone wall in need of repair and pathways through the hazel-scrub.
